The world isn’t short of ambitious and talented managers working their way up the corporate ladder toward a position on the executive team and daring to hope for the ultimate CEO job, provided they have the right skills, connections, timing, and luck. And it’s easy to see how the allure of the four Ps—power, prestige, pay, and perks—makes that top spot so coveted.
Yet at the same time, it can be unfathomable why anyone would want to be a CEO today, given the unrealistic growth expectations (maximize short-term shareholder wealth and steer the company toward long-term socially, environmentally, and ethically responsible behavior), incessant pressure, and relentless scrutiny.
