I2S (Inter-Integrated circuit Sound) is an audio standard for communicating PCM (Pulse-Code Modulation) or PDM (Pulse-Density Modulation) encoded digital audio data between devices. For example, audio input to a microphone is converted to a digital signal, which is subsequently converted to audio output.
