Now let's look at how to use these data designs, and use ADO.NET support, in different types of applications. We'll discuss embedded, client-server, three-tier, and disconnected applications.
Embedded applications are defined as applications in which a single user owns the data store. The data store usually is local, existing as a file on the user's desktop or PDA (personal digital assistant) device. Access, dBase, and other file-based databases—referred to as XBase—are ideally suited for this type of application. Although these data sources understand SQL, they deal in file offset–based records.
