An observer from outer space might assume that the dominant life form on planet Earth is the car.

The proportion of people living in cities is growing. The worlds’ urban population exceeded 50% in 2008 and had reached 56% in 2023 (World Bank 2023). Cities are now the primary places where people live. The positive aspect is that dense urban living minimises the land taken up by each person. The negative aspects are energy demands, the generation of waste, and pollution from vehicles. A key misstep in twentieth-century urban planning was to give priority to the car and the infrastructure for cars. Each of these negative aspects can be turned around by good long-term city design.
