What Happens if an Individual Gets in Trouble?

Leaders should understand the history and ramifications of white-collar crime. What happens if values-based leaders (VBLs) or their associates get caught up in criminal activity? This chapter discusses how white-collar criminals were treated before the Federal Sentencing Guidelines for Individuals were passed in 1987. Prior to that time, federal judges had a great deal of discretion in sentencing. In response to sentencing disparity, Congress passed the Sentencing Reform Act in 1984, which established the United States Sentencing Commission—(USSC).
