Connecting to the Internet

Although there are undoubtedly a few small business and home networks that are not connected to the Internet, most networks have some sort of access to the global network. Such access is a mixed blessing for most network administrators, because it opens up the network to a huge range of security problems. (We’ll cover many of those problems in Chapter 12.) In this chapter, however, you’ll read about the various options for connecting your network to the Internet; Chapter 6 will delve into how to share that connection over your network. But first, we’ll look at what happens when a connection is made to the Internet.
