LTE Performance Evaluation
This chapter presents link-level simulation results for Long-Term Evolution (LTE) and explains the signal processing algorithms involved. In particular, we focus on the link between a base station, which is called an Evolved base station (eNodeB) in LTE, and a single User Equipment (UE). Such a simulation scenario enables the comparison and performance investigation of different single-user transmitter and receiver algorithms (for example, channel estimation [34], equalizers [44], time and frequency synchronization [43], UE feedback calculation [26]). Specifically, we consider the computation of the UE feedback indicators defined in the LTE specification in Section 10.4. Furthermore, a mathematical model of the physical layer of the LTE Downlink (DL) is proposed in Section 10.1, the performance of which is later evaluated by simulations in Section 10.6. The simulations are performed with the “Vienna LTE Link Level Simulator” which is described in Chapter 11. In Section 10.2, a generic receiver structure for an LTE UE is described and an overview about related signal processing algorithms is provided. The post-equalization Signal to Interference and Noise Ratio (SINR) of a linear receiver is derived in Section 10.3 and, furthermore, the important concept of SINR averaging is introduced.
