EVERY FALL, A COUPLE of weeks before Thanksgiving, I stay home from work, turn off my phone, and sit at my dining room table all day. Hour after hour, I write personal thank you notes to everyone who has helped me along the way: family, teachers, mentors, old classmates, friends, clients, vendors, bosses, and colleagues.

I enclose each thank you into a beautiful Thanksgiving-themed greeting card. I pause after I finish each one, just to absorb what I’ve written and keep a thought about the person I wrote it to. ...
