Your Personal Value Proposition
If companies were honest about the work required from their people these days, I reckon most job interviews would go something like this:
So, we’ve put together a bunch of stuff in the job description that we think needs doing. There’s some routine work that will probably get eaten by an algorithm soon. And there’s a bunch of vague statements alluding to our culture and the kind of character we think fits well here.
But truthfully, we’re not really sure what your job will consist of. There’s so much change happening every day. And we can guarantee there will be so many mishaps, hiccups, and stuff-ups, we kinda just need you to be awesome at everything. Solving problems we’ve never seen before, creating value in ways we haven’t thought of yet, making magic around the office like someone we didn’t know we needed but will struggle to continue without.
So, can you just communicate to us what’s rare and radical about you, and how you think you’ll rock‘n’roll this gig? And if we all feel it, you’re in!
I don’t want you to have to wait for that interview. Nor do I want you to be on the back foot when this kind of thing moves from the periphery to the centre. I want you to get the jump on the next decade and proactively position yourself as someone who matters.
