Susan Edwards: “Diversity Is an Action, Not an Ideal”

Susan Edwards grew up in the suburbs just north of Milwaukee. When she arrived at Public Allies, she had just completed college, had been working odd jobs, and was contemplating law school. One day a friend recommended Public Allies.

“The leadership component really spoke to me,” Susan recalls. “It was not just about service but much more. Though I was from a lily-white suburb, I was aware of segregation in Milwaukee and that there were huge parts of the community I knew nothing about. I was interested in a program that would give me an experience with our whole community.”1
