I COULD NOT have written this book even a few years ago, because, as Henry David Thoreau wrote, “How vain it is to sit down to write when you have not stood up to live.”

However, since I have been blessed to live a life that many people will only dream of, I write so that others may learn from this book—just as I have learned from others. Any financial gain from its publication will go 100 percent to college scholarships for needy individuals at the University of Virginia College at Wise, my own alma mater.
