Stockholm: The founding of IIED

IIED began as the International Institute for Environmental Affairs, established on the initiative of Robert O Anderson who was its Chairman and principal source of funding. ‘Bob’ Anderson was a prominent figure in the oil and gas industry, and his company was involved in the extraction of oil from Alaska's Prudhoe Bay. The construction of the pipeline from Prudhoe Bay was much delayed, and made more costly, by the controversy surrounding environmental impacts on the sensitive Arctic terrain and wildlife.
