I have discussed a great number of existing technologies (and will discuss many more) that seem to do certain jobs very well. Exchange sends and stores messages, SQL Server stores relational data, Outlook is an awesome Exchange client, and so on. What you really need is some way of taking all the pieces and seamlessly combining them to create one unified solution. This seems to be the tricky part. You have a half dozen different applications each providing their own unique set of functionality.
