The proponents of emotional-intelligence, charismatic-leadership, and personality-based assessment tools are hardly the first or only psychologists to overemphasize attributes that are only loosely related to business performance. In fact, there are a numbing variety of leadership theories and psychologists selling instruments designed to measure them. What becomes confusing is that all of these measures are marketed with impressive statistics which support their correlations to performance. But as any experienced executive will tell you, these assessment methods rarely live up to their promise, and most fade into the background with the emergence of the next leadership fad.
