We moved as a family to Dorset from London in 1991. The experience of living in such a rural environment had quite an effect on us. We felt quite cut off culturally; there seemed to be no venues showing the kind of work we wanted to see; most of the exhibitions were fairly routine and unchallenging. We did feel as if we were in the middle of a (very beautiful) cultural desert. In 1998 we moved from the small rural village where we had been living, to Weymouth.
