An Exercise for Managers: Developing Talent Through Assignments
MANY MANAGERS ARE aware of the power of a stretch assignment for developing their direct reports. However, most struggle with how to evaluate which assignments are a good match for which direct reports. I have found that a little education about developmental assignments, plus a chance to discuss a case that highlights the issues that such assignments raise in organizations, can equip these managers with the basic ideas to more proactively use assignments as a strategy for developing their direct reports.
