It's worth its weight in gold, in terms of what it allows me to do.

Performance tuning is a very wide subject; it can be approached artistically like someone trying to write music or paint a picture, which involves many discarded versions of the canvas or notes and bars by making changes to the system in an effort to improve the look or sound by trial and error. While ideally a more scientific approach to performance optimization is preferred, performance engineers start out with intuition before using scientific data.
