Conceptual Models for Training

There is a general consensus that operators of complex systems use and control these production tools by forming mental models of the system which can differ from those used by system design engineers. The aim of this chapter is to develop the idea that a conceptual model is a kind of system model that combines the properties and functionalities of both the operator’s mental model and real operating models. The present discussion centers on the relevance of these conceptual models for operator training, particularly in the domain of dynamic environment management tasks.
