TOWARD EMOTIONAL DEPTH
IMAX had maintained 3D in its theaters since the mid-1980s but with a few exceptions, including nonfiction feature Wings of Courage (1995) and 2004’s animated The Polar Express, the format was generally reserved for documentaries.
The current surge in mainstream 3D filmmaking began with the development of digital cinema projection systems, which could display a more precise 3D image than had previously been possible. The first studio to take advantage of this was Walt Disney Pictures, which opened the CG animated film Chicken Little in 2005 in 2D and on 84 freshly-minted digital 3D projection screens.
