The skateboarding photographer Allen Ying utilized a fast f/2 lens to capture this urban activity that, according to Ying, “embodies a spirit of conflict, imagination, and triumph, encourages the questioning of authority, and the exploration of free alternative thinking.” He made this image around midnight, in near darkness, on the roof of a building. Concerned that flash “would change the mood, misrepresent the skate session, blind the skater, as well as draw attention to police below,” Ying “strategically placed a small, portable LED panel to light the surface of the roof as well as the skater, and balanced the exposure [by checking his histogram] ...
