With his camera in one hand and a flash in the other (to stop the action), Mark Cohen violated the rules of personal space (2–3 feet from the subject) to capture the machismo of the boy with a cigarette. Believing the prepared mind can make the most of chance, Cohen relied on the depth of field of his wide-angle lens that allowed him to guesstimate both the focus distance and the framing (he did not look through the viewfinder).
