The primary role of the eXtreme project manager is to gain and sustain commitment to the project mission. Commitment occurs when stakeholders, including the core project team, have bought into the project. And buy-in occurs when there is a critical mass of desire to support the project, as well as confidence in its ability to succeed. You can tell that commitment is present when you have a stable and motivated core project team and the support of the stakeholder community at large.
When these two elements are present, the project gains forward momentum. It takes on a positive energy and stays in a good mood. And keeping the project in a good mood is the top priority for the extreme project manager. ...
