ON THE DAY JACKIE, a manager in the auditing department of a bank that had been made much larger by a recent merger, had a review scheduled with Ross, who was one of her new reports, she was nervous. The bank had firmed up its performance evaluations to make them more specific and fine-grained.

Through the grapevine, Jackie had heard that Ross was known to be ambitious and quick to challenge any feedback that didn’t serve his professional forward motion.
