5 Continuous-Wave Silica Fiber Lasers
5.1 Introduction
This chapter reviews one of the two main types of fiber lasers: namely continuous wave fiber lasers. Continuous operation of a fiber laser (and any other laser of this type) means that the laser continuously emits light under continuous pumping conditions. The fiber lasers we are reviewing in this chapter are typically silica-based. We shall focus our attention on points such as rare-earth ion spectroscopy, resonator configurations, theoretical performance as well as laser characteristics including output power, lasing threshold, slope efficiency, and the influence of detrimental effects.
