7 Narrow Linewidth Fiber Lasers
7.1 Introduction
Narrow linewidth fiber lasers are highly desirable in several applications such as optical communication and spectroscopy. In this chapter, the main theories as well as techniques for achieving narrow linewidth, single longitudinal mode, and tunability of fiber lasers are presented.
Narrow linewidth operation is fundamentally easily achievable in fiber lasers. The core diameter of the fiber is usually comprised between 3 µm and 10 µm. Hence, a relatively low input power often results in significantly high intensities.
