Chapter 3

A Brief History of Fiber Optics

The principles guiding fiber optic transmission, be it video, audio, or data signals, occurred in the same time period as the development of radio transmission. As with the parallel technological advancements in radio transmission and television transmission, fiber optic transmission learned much from basic electronic transmission.

Early Developments in Light Transmission

In 1870, John Tyndall of England demonstrated the early principles of fiber optic transmission to the British Royal Society in London.
