FIELD GUIDE: HOW TO BE A FASHION DESIGNER
All these guidelines are obtained
with the assistance of the follow-
ing resources, which should be duly
examined:
– Text
– Image
– Drawing
Music (in the case of audiovisual
material)
The final step in the development of
a concept book or thematic panel
consists of producing a graphic unifi-
cation in a single piece, which can be
presented in different formats:
– A book
A poster or a collage on a rigid
support
– An animation
– A short film
– A digital presentation
Once the guidelines of the collection
have been defined and realized, it
is necessary to develop the specific
garments that will conform to them.
The most commonly used method for
doing so involves fashion figures.
THE FASHION FIGURE
This is a two-dimensional represen-
tation of a certain look or garment.
A fashion figure should, above all,
appropriately show the fundamental
qualities of what it is intended to rep-
resent; that is, accurately represent
the silhouette, colors, textures, etc.
It is important to know that it is not
necessary to be an expert illustrator
in order to be able to express an idea
on paper. A fashion figure does not
have to be a fashion illustration, it
only needs to be clear about what it
is you want to express.
PROPORTIONS
In order to properly draw a fashion
figure, it is necessary to know the
proportions of the human body and the
relations between its parts. The human
body is divided into three main blocks:
the head, the trunk (which runs from
the shoulders to the pubis) and the
extremities (legs and arms). The total
height of a person is equivalent to eight
times the length of the head, although
in fashion representation the measure
of nine heads is used so as to achieve
a more stylized figure; each of these
measures is a module.
If a vertical line is drawn along each
module and some horizontal lines
in its halves and quarters, it is pos-
sible to locate all the points needed
for drawing a completely proportional
