7 Foundation Fieldbus

7.1 Introduction

The Foundation Fieldbus has its origin in the Fieldbus Foundation—a nonprofit consortium that recommends and develops the technical specifications for Foundation Fieldbus. These are based on ISA/ANSI S50.02 and IEC 61158. The standard specifies the communication requirements and methodology for the fieldbus. Manufacturers who follow the standards have to develop their products following the specifications recommended in the standard so that instruments from different manufacturers can be interoperable. The Fieldbus Foundation was formed in 1994 with the merging of Interoperable Systems Project and WorldFip North America.
