19.1 INTRODUCTION

Wireless Highway Addressable Remote Transmission (WirelessHART or WHART), like ISA100.11a, is fast becoming an emerging standard in industrial wireless communication arena that promises to revolutionize the process control and automation industry. Existing wireless technologies such as Bluetooth, ZigBee, or WiFi cannot be used in industrial plants because of their inherent drawbacks. Bluetooth is primarily targeted at personal area networks (PAN) whose range is limited to within 10 m.
