The HBO documentary Casting By opens with director Martin Scorsese saying, “More than 90 percent of directing a picture is the right casting.” Getting the cast to bring the characters to life and make the situations real is one of the most important parts of directing. Everything else could really run by itself, if need be. No one other than the director can work with the actors. Without engaging actors with the right on-screen chemistry, audiences won’t get seduced into the story, feeling as if it’s real. But with the right cast, the viewer can emotionally connect to what is happening on screen. This is the talent any good actor brings to a picture.
