The US film industry divides itself between New York and Los Angeles. Los Angeles is the undisputed center of the film industry, but if you look closely, a lot of young directing talent, especially those pesky Sundance filmmakers, come out of New York. Los Angeles is the home base of more mainstream commercial films, while New York tends to be the center of independent features. There are also a few smaller cities outside these two, such as Austin, that have vibrant independent filmmaking scenes.
