Best known for his epic achievement Gone with the Wind (1939), producer David O. Selznick left his mark as an exacting perfectionist whose taste and attention to detail made him one of Hollywood’s best and most dogmatic moviemakers.

His preferred method of communication was the memo. Selznick started penning missives as a teenager, while working for his father’s film distribution company on the East Coast. The memorandum became a way for the young Selznick to get his point across with clarity and authority. That method stuck as he ascended through the ranks in Hollywood in the following years.
