CAMERA MOVEMENT
DEVELOPING AN APPRECIATION FOR MOVEMENT
As a still photographer you don’t have to worry much about motion. If you want to convey a sense of fluidity from a waterfall, you can simply drag the shutter. If you want to freeze the action of a racing car, you can use a fast shutter speed.
Filmmaking is different. As a medium, it is defined by motion—the action within the frame, but also of the frame itself. It is difficult to find a contemporary Hollywood film that does not use a lot of camera movement. Because of this, most people expect to see movement when they watch anything on a screen, and a series of images that remain stagnant for too long can be perceived as a slideshow as opposed to a story in motion.
