THE ART OF LIGHTING: CREATING NEW WORLDS
WHY LIGHTING IS ESSENTIAL
As was discussed in the previous chapter, you can shape your stories and manipulate the viewer with the movement of the camera (or lack thereof). Among your filmmaking “ammo” you should also include lens and camera selection, the composition of the shots, the set design and props used in different scenes, the positioning of the actors (that’s called blocking, by the way), the music and sound effects, the pace of the editing, and even the grading. These elements are some of the building blocks at our disposal for crafting visual stories. Lighting is the element that holds the pieces together.
