In an increasingly dynamic and complex environment, higher education institutions are faced with more unprecedented challenges than ever before. The weakened and volatile economy, political and public perceptions of the industry including sharpening pressures to demonstrate what a college degree offers, increased regulation and oversight, opportunities and uncertainties of new technology, and growing competition for new students at home and abroad represent a few examples of the types of challenges that institutions are dealing with. Many institutions are prioritizing transparent plans and disciplined budgets to address these challenges, while balancing the core institutional missions of education, research, and public service with financial, compliance, market, and competitive realities.
