Chapter 11

Commodities

Abstract

Trading in commodity futures dates back thousands of years. Today, forwards, futures, swaps, and options are traded on a wide range of commodities: Energy, agricultural products, precious metals, and base metals. Participants in commodity markets include hedgers, individual traders, portfolio managers, proprietary trading firms, hedge funds, and marketmakers. To provide portfolio diversification, commodity indexes and Exchange Traded Funds have been constructed and are actively traded. Some Fintech applications are: Blockchain projects in trade clearing, settlement, and reporting; “smart” contracts in physical commodity transactions; and artificial intelligence in data analysis and trading.
