When I was a young boy, I read comic books. Lots of them. One of my heroes was Superman. I’m sure you’ve heard of him—he’s still around today. For a brief time in my early years, I believed that he was real. An actual living superhero. Eventually, I realized that the Man of Steel and his alter-ego, mild-mannered reporter Clark Kent, were nothing more than the invention of Jerry Siegel’s and Joe Shuster’s creative minds. Since that time—all through junior high, high school, and college—my only real superheroes were my mother, Dorothy Blanchard, and my father, Ted Blanchard.
