In a last mile network, wireless is an important revenue-generating segment because of its commodity and mobility characteristics. The wireless network runs on the optical backbone for transport. Many of the wireless services are voice based. This creates an intricate end-to-end model. The wireless traffic has to be sent seamlessly across the optical backbone. The management strategies in the optical backbone have to be now extended to incorporate this extra delay-sensitive wireless traffic. Wireless traffic by itself may be geographically very diverse, and provisioning in the backbone might have to be done at very fast speeds.
