Chapter 20. Managing Reusable Components
Why do we have a chapter on software reuse in a book devoted to the use of a few core metrics to manage software development? We have this chapter because reuse carries the promise of reducing the effective size of the software product. As you have seen in the earlier chapters, reduced size leads to decreased schedule time and effort. It leads to lower cost of development. In the highly competitive economy that the whole world now inhabits, these are critically important objectives. Therefore, a premium on reuse is emerging. As with other economic activities, software reuse has to be managed. And management of reuse implies the presence of metrics for that purpose.
