Postproduction begins with the lens. While aspects such as set design, lighting, and wardrobe all combine to create the overall mood of a shot, the camera lens determines what will actually be seen, discarding everything that doesn't come under its gaze. This process of culling is repeated throughout the postproduction chain, most notably through editing, and is irreversible —you can't recover detail that wasn't originally shot.
