The National Hurricane Centre reported that Hurricane Sandy's tropical-force winds extended 820 miles (more than 1300 kilometres) at their widest. In the US the storm took 125 lives, wiping out power and communications to half of Manhattan and a reported 7.5 million people. New Jersey was the worst hit.
