9. Commanding
In an environment like Windows 8.1, the touch language gestures that we examined in the last chapter are a command language. But trying to write a non-trivial application with only touch input would be a bit like writing War and Peace with eight verbs—probably possible, but it would require more time and ingenuity than are available to the average development project.
Fortunately, while Windows 8.1 is going to require that we re-think how we do a lot of UX patterns, we don’t have to start completely from scratch. The basic commanding surfaces that we’re used to—menus, popups and dialogs—are still available; they just work a little differently. That’s the good news.
