CHAPTER 4
START WITH TRUST
The best way to find out if you can trust somebody is to trust them.
—ERNEST HEMINGWAY
Today’s global trust crisis makes headlines so often it’s almost cliché. A global trust barometer has fallen to its lowest levels ever.64 Our trust in corporations, government, media, and academe seems fundamentally broken. Worse, we increasingly mistrust one another. Consider but a few ways in which this plays out all too often:
• We don’t trust government leaders or CEOs to be ethical.
• We don’t trust the media to report the truth.
• We don’t trust corporations to put the needs of society before this quarter’s returns.
• We don’t trust someone who looks different, eats different foods, or wears different clothes than we do.
