Uncovered foam as a finished texture can also be a successful option depending on the design. If looking for a matte, soft, porous finish, then open-celled urethane foam (reticulated or upholstery) is the way to go. If the finished surface is smooth or highly detailed with carvings, then closed-cell foam is the best bet.
