Simply put, we have played this game out; this game may have started with the Age of Enlightenment, and was surely marked by the French and American revolutions. The English 18th century was referred to as the Age of Enlightenment and, sometimes, the Age of Reason. In fact, up to the Age of Reason, much thought revolved around mysticism mixed with a strong measure of superstition. Nevertheless, the English 18th century—the age of science and literature—was framed by new thought and a significant paradigm shift from the world of the 17th century that seemed so chaotic.
