The Exercises in this Chapter will provide a technical lesson and a set of aesthetic exercises focusing on values that make up the tonal range of a composition. In Adobe Photoshop, you’ll explore the file size and resolution of a bitmap image to understand an image created by pixels. Then you’ll study the values in a grayscale digital photograph. You’ll learn to apply a zone system to gray values and to use a digital camera with this system in mind, for readers who opt to shoot in manual mode. Finally, you’ll apply a Levels adjustment layer to the photograph to increase contrast in its tonal range.
