APPENDIX AXsan Security

Xsan is Apple software that allows you to virtualize your hard drive environment. Using Xsan, you can take any Fibre Channel storage device (often referred to as a target) and connect Mac systems to it in a highly configurable manner. This allows multiple users to access data striped across a large amount of data (let's just say five Xserve RAIDs' worth) as though they're one volume. Each user can then access data at speeds of up to 4Gbps. The Xsan software then ties the environment together.

Uses for Xsan include web farms, file-sharing farms, high-definition video environments, and multiuser/high-bandwidth creative environments.
