Perspectives on the Fourier Modal Method

In the previous chapters, FMM and LFMM were established for use in the modal analysis of collinear multiblock and multi-super-block structures. Using the perfect matched layer (PML) approach, nonperiodic structures were successfully modeled and analyzed by FMM. At this stage, it might be concluded that FMM is now nearly mature and that the focus of future issues of FMM should be applications. However, as this chapter will show, by the idea of local Fourier analysis, the theoretical territory of FMM can be expanded to the development of novel theories.
