Stopping the X-Windows System

The next chapter will provide a detailed discussion on how to work with Gnome. For now, we'll show you how to log out of X-Windows.

There are three ways to shut down Gnome and get back to the command prompt:

  • Click on the monitor icon with the moon in it that is on the Gnome Panel at the bottom of your screen.
  • Click on Desktop on the menu at the top of your screen and then select Log Out.
  • Click on the footprint icon on the Gnome Panel, and select Log Out.

Whichever method you use, you will get a dialog box asking you if you really want to log out. There will also be a check box in this dialog box called Save current setup. Selecting this check box will cause Gnome to remember the panel applets you had running, ...
