Preparing for the Worst: Backups and Mirrors
No matter how many precautions you take, no matter how much of a veteran you are, your system will one day be hacked, your hardware will fail, or something else will happen that will make your data unusable and recovery impossible. The only defense against this is to have the tools available for a complete rebuild from the ground up. Prepare for the worst, says one of the corollaries to Murphy's Law, and the worst will never happen. If precautions are the price we pay for safety, so be it.
